Ways to Pay
With a FasTrak toll tag, tolls are deducted from your prepaid FasTrak account. FasTrak is the preferred choice for commuters and others who cross this bridge frequently. Carpools must have a toll tag to receive discounted tolls. Learn more about how to obtain a FasTrak toll tag.
License Plate Account
If you travel over Bay Area bridges regularly and do not want a prepaid toll tag, consider opening a License Plate Account. This type of account is now eligible to pay tolls at all Bay Area toll bridges. License Plate Accounts are not recommended for rental vehicle users. Learn more about opening a License Plate Account.
Another pay-as-you-go option is a one-time payment. You have 48 hours to pay a toll after crossing the bridge. Payments can be made online, over the phone or in person by contacting the Customer Service Center. This is a good choice for rental vehicle users. Learn more about opening a short-term one-time payment account.
If no account exists when a toll crossing is made, FasTrak will send an invoice to the vehicle's registered owner. No extra fees will be added to the toll invoice if it is paid within 21 days. Unpaid toll invoices will escalate to toll evasion notices with additional penalties and fees. Learn more about how to pay an invoice.
Qualified carpool vehicles that use a designated carpool lane will pay a reduced-price toll of $3.50 during carpool hours, 5:00 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday. The following vehicles qualify to use the carpool lane:
- 2-axle vehicles, without a trailer, carrying 3 or more people
- Clean air vehicles (CAVs) with green, yellow, blue or orange DMV-issued decal
- 2 axle, 2-seater vehicles carrying 2 people
Find others to carpool with by registering with Merge (opens in a new window). You will be matched with others along your route, can agree on days to carpool and can keep that same carpool partner as long as you like. There are no built-in charges to register or use the service.
All carpool and other eligible vehicles must use designated carpool lanes and a FasTrak toll tag to receive discounted tolls.
Commute Bus or Vanpools
A commute bus or vanpool vehicle may cross toll free at any time in designated lane(s), in accordance with operational procedures. When passing through staffed lanes, vehicles will be charged an axle-based toll unless the driver presents a toll-free commute bus ticket or uses a non-revenue FasTrak toll tag. If you travel over more than one state-owned bridge per day during peak commute hours and pay bridge tolls with a FasTrak toll tag or License Plate Account, you will receive a $1.00 discount off your second toll ($0.50 for carpools).
Only 2-axle vehicles are eligible.
You must use the same toll tag or same vehicle license plate for both tolls.
You can receive a maximum of 2 discounts per calendar day, per toll tag or vehicle.
Peak commute hours are defined as 5:00 am to 10:00 am and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Monday through Friday. State-owned bridges include Antioch, Benicia-Martinez, Carquinez, Dumbarton, Richmond-San Rafael, San Francisco-Oakland Bay and San Mateo-Hayward.
