Clean Air Vehicles
Clean air vehicles (CAVs) with valid clean air vehicle decals can travel toll free or at a discounted rate on Bay Area express lanes and state-owned bridges. In order to receive the correct discount, eligible clean air vehicles should use a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag.
ELIGIBLE VEHICLES
Only CAVs displaying purple or red decals are eligible for discounted and toll-free travel.

The California Air Resources Board (ARB) is responsible for the official list of vehicles qualified to receive Clean Air Vehicle decals. Visit the ARB website or call the ARB's toll-free number at 800-242-4450 to determine whether your vehicle is eligible.

CAV decals are administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles. To learn about applying for a decal, click here.

CHOOSING A TOLL TAG

To receive toll discounts in Bay Area express lanes, eligible clean air vehicles must use a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag.

FasTrak Flex for I-580 and I-680 Contra Costa Express Lanes

A FasTrak Flex toll tag is required for eligible CAVs to travel toll free in the I-580 and I-680 Contra Costa express lanes. The FasTrak Flex toll tag works like a standard FasTrak toll tag but has a three-position switch to indicate the number of occupants in the vehicle. A CAV decal is not required to get a FasTrak Flex toll tag.

For more information about the FasTrak Flex toll tag, please visit https://www.bayareafastrak.org/en/guide/doINeedFlex.shtml

FasTrak CAV for SR-237 Express Lanes

Solo drivers in eligible CAVs will receive a 50% discount off the toll if they use a FasTrak CAV toll tag. The FasTrak CAV toll tag is the only transponder that will communicate the discounted toll rate to roadside toll equipment. Clean air vehicles with two or more people can travel toll free as a carpool, but must use a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag.

EXPRESS LANES

Bay Area Express Lanes are specially-designated freeway lanes that give solo drivers the choice to pay a toll for a more reliable trip. Eligible clean air vehicles can travel in these lanes for free or at a discounted rate with a FasTrak Flex or a FasTrak CAV toll tag. Express lanes are available on I-580, I-680 Contra Costa, I-680 Sunol, and SR-237.

SR-237

Solo drivers in eligible CAVs pay a toll in the SR-237 express lanes. Drivers will receive a 50% discount if they use the FasTrak CAV toll tag. Solo drivers in eligible clean air vehicles using a standard FasTrak toll tag or FasTrak Flex in the SR-237 express lanes will be charged the full toll.

Carpools of two or more occupants can travel toll free.

Set the switch on the FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag to match the number of occupants in the vehicle.

I-580 and I-680 Contra Costa

Eligible clean air vehicles can travel in the express lanes toll free no matter how many passengers are in the vehicle, but must use a FasTrak Flex or FasTrak CAV toll tag.

The FasTrak Flex toll tag should be switched to position 2 or position 3+.

The FasTrak CAV toll tag should be switched to match the number of occupants in the vehicle.

I-680 Sunol

Eligible clean air vehicles can travel in the express lanes toll free no matter how many passengers are in the vehicle. A FasTrak toll tag is not necessary.

If you have a standard FasTrak toll tag, place it in the provided Mylar bag to avoid being charged.

If you have a FasTrak Flex toll tag, set it in position 2 or position 3+ to avoid being charged.

If you have a FasTrak CAV toll tag, set it to match the number of occupants.

BRIDGE TOLLS

On the seven state-owned toll bridges, eligible CAVs may use the dedicated carpool lanes during designated carpool hours and receive the discounted toll no matter how many people are in the car. You must use the carpool lane and a FasTrak toll tag.

GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE: Clean air vehicles are not eligible for reduced tolls and may not use carpool lanes on the Golden Gate Bridge unless they meet the minimum passenger requirements for carpools and have a valid FasTrak toll tag.

ORDER A FASTRAK CAV TOLL TAG

FasTrak CAV toll tags are only available online and a copy of your DMV-issued CAV Certificate is required.

A FasTrak CAV toll tag can only be used in the vehicle to which it is registered and can't be transferred to other vehicles. If you have more than one eligible clean air vehicle, you'll need to order a FasTrak CAV for each one. Eligibility for discounts will automatically expire when your clean air decal expires.

After your application has been processed, your FasTrak CAV toll tag will be mailed to you within 7-10 business days.

Provide your account information and upload your certification form. Create a FasTrak account and upload your certification form.

A FasTrak CAV toll tag is only necessary if you travel in the SR-237 express lanes. For bridge tolls and other Bay Area express lanes, you can use a FasTrak Flex toll tag.
